Chapter 7

Amber found herself being escorted out the front door by Kevin, her arm draped casually over the crook of his, with his left hand carefully settled over top to hide her shaking. After he explained their ruse, she discovered she had a case of nerves. They were walking out as if they were a couple, ducking into Jon’s waiting limo that was parked out front like all of the others and then they’d drive around to the side door and pick Jon up and Kevin would move to the front seat with the driver. Sounded to her like a sensible plan and so far it was going smoothly, but it didn’t stop her from having a huge case of nerves. “Are you sure about this?”

“Smile and act like we’re a couple.” He assured her, his own tux hiding the fact he was security, not an attendee, this wasn’t Jon’s style or at least not of late. Picking up women was something he used to do back in the day, but since his divorce Jon spent more time running from women than inviting them into his life. It was something they’d discuss later he was sure as after this many years they were closer than just bodyguard and boss. Amber nodded, plastered on a sweet smile and ran the gauntlet of press without a single flashbulb going off and slipped into the back of one of the dozen or so limos waiting in the circle while Kevin sat on the seat opposite her. “Good job, now to get the boss.”

Sitting back against the glove leather interior, Amber let her eyes study the amenities, there was the ever present mini-bar, a DVD player, a solid black privacy partition between the driver and them, and a stereo system that she suspected could rock the place, but her eyes came to rest on the sunroof had mirrored tint on it reflecting back the interior of the car, all of it illuminated by tiny theater lights that gave the inside a warm glow. The man knew how to ride in style. She closed her eyes briefly, letting her mind absorb everything and realized that for the first time she hadn’t looked at him like a rock and roll god, he was a man that appeared to care about her. The rush of cool air and the sound of the car door closing brought her back to the present, he was in the car and smiling that oh so familiar perfect smile and it was only for her. “You escaped.”

“I knew what was waiting for me.” He shrugged out of his jacket, the bow tie following closely behind, his long slender fingers unfastening the top button of his dress shirt. “Now, I’m going to collect that kiss.” His lips came down on hers in a rush; there was no waiting for what he wanted, not after having missed her as badly as he had for the last two months.
