Chapter 6
“Amber listen” his voice was low, almost a purr “do you know Kevin?”
Questioningly she gazed up “no, should I?”
“He’s my bodyguard.”
“Oh, the big guy that walks with you in all the pictures?”
Laughing lightly, a laugh she knew much better than any casual fan would. “Yeah, him. I have to do what I came here for, while I’m up there” he nodded towards the stage “I want you to find him and this has to be said precisely, tell him that Frank told you to be discreet. You got that?”
“Frank? As in Frank Sinatra?” It was her turn to laugh.
Stopping on the floor, his eyebrows knitted together “do I even want to know how you know that?”
“Not really” she admitted impishly, if he knew how much she really knew about him he’d probably run quickly the opposite direction.
Considering it, he shrugged again, it really didn’t matter so long as she was with him “as soon as I do my bit, we’re out of here.” The song was over and he escorted her back to Evan and Summer, who she could see was simmering in her own envy.
“And when exactly were you going to tell me you’d already met Jon?” Evan growled.
Smiling sweetly, Amber innocently eyed her boss “I don’t have to tell you everything, you know.”
Frowning, he could see Jon across the room talking to some of the board members, deciding it figured that he knew them already, then he was up at the podium without any fanfare and all eyes turned to Jon.
“Evan,” Amber tugged on his arm “I’m not feeling well, I’m going to take a cab home.” It was the most convenient excuse she could come up with on short notice.
“You’re sure? What about Jon?”
“I think my period’s coming. I already told him I wasn’t feeling well, make my apologies for me, please?” No man would question that even though her period had just been there two weeks prior. Pleading for his assistance when none was needed, but it would help cover their ruse.
Nodding, he returned his attention to Jon as she slipped away in search of Kevin.
“Hello, my name is Jon Bon Jovi.” He waited for the applause to settle, one eye keeping Amber in his peripheral vision as she sought out and found Kevin who glanced at him, he nodded almost imperceptibly and as Kev escorted her out of sight he relaxed and continued “as many of you know I believe strongly in volunteerism, in fact, our motto is that volunteerism is the new black. Habitat for Humanity is a great cause, it helps people get a hand up instead of a hand out and tonight to help the cause there is a silent auction for you to bid on various items that companies have generously donated to help raise money. In my hands I have something else for you to bid on.” He held up a plain white envelope “in my hand is the chance for one of you, or one of your companies to receive a private concert with my band” he waited while the gathered crowd settled down again “it’ll be over there for you to bid on and then it’ll be on the website for a week. The bidding starts at $10,000 and remember every dime that is raised will go directly to Habitat, so it will be tax deductible. That’s all I’ve come to say, you have yourself a good night.” The roar of applause hit him as he left the stage, a sound he was well accustomed to although he found that it meant more these days when it was for his charitable work rather than from the adoring fans at his shows.
