Chapter 4

Standing in front of her mirror, dressed in her brand new deep burgundy evening gown with its plunging neckline and low back, spaghetti straps and beaded bodice, Amber gave herself the once over, her hair was piled up with tendrils running down her neckline and spiraled down around her ears, the pearl drop diamond necklace that her widowed aunt gave her on her trip to Miami settled nicely between her breasts while the matching earrings dangled seductively from her lobes. She’d barely had time for her nails, but her longtime tech managed to match them nearly perfectly with the dress and added some three dimensional glitter to the top coat to make them sparkle like the glass beads outlining her neckline. Vaguely she wondered if her outfit was too over the top, but dismissed the thought when she remembered Evan saying that she’d be pleased when she met this mystery man, which turned her mind back to who he might be. She was hoping he didn’t mean one of the corporate big wigs that she admired or even Donald Trump, none of them were worth the price tag on her gown, shoes, hair and nails. No, whoever this man was had to be special or she didn’t figure that Evan would have invited her to start with. Contemplating her collection of perfumes, she settled on her favorite and misted the air with it before stepping into the mist. She didn’t want it overwhelming, but then also wanted it to be apparent enough to notice. Convinced she was ready, she stepped out of the bathroom, picked up her silver evening bag and the silver sparkly shawl that she decided complimented her dress and checked the time on the clock. It was eight oh five and Evan wasn’t there yet, peering out her window she saw his car pull up just as she was about to withdraw her cell phone from her bag, instead she set the alarm on her house and headed out the door.

Evan was starting up the sidewalk as she emerged. “Amber, you look stunning tonight.”

His low whistle wasn’t lost on her, it raised her confidence two notches and her smile rose with it. “Thank you. Now are you going to tell me who this mystery man is or do I have to guess?” Locking eyes with her boss that she wasn’t about to tell he looked almost as yummy in his tux as Sam Elliott for fear that it would go to his head.

“Guess away, but even if you get it right I’m not telling you. You’ll meet him there, he had another obligation before attending tonight, so he’ll be there a little later.” Smiling knowingly, he opened the door to the back seat and waited for her to settle in before closing it. Shaking his head in disbelief that his prim and proper assistant could look as incredible as she did tonight. He hoped that his buddy was as impressed as he was, even though Evan had no illusions that his friend met far more than his share of beautiful women.

Amber sat back against the leather seat of Evan’s Mercedes and allowed her mind to return to that brief, bittersweet plane trip, wishing that some day she’d get a chance to see him again and let him know exactly how she felt about spending the better part of her flight in the cramped jetliner’s head. Then again she reminded herself, he didn’t approach her, she approached him and what she got was what she asked for. Sighing she opened her eyes to watch as the fall colors flowed past her window and was grateful for the Indian summer weather they were experiencing this weekend, at least it wasn’t cold like it had been a couple of weeks ago and as it would be in another few days. It was then that she realized that Summer hadn’t said a word when she entered the car. “Summer, how are you doing tonight? Isn’t this weather marvelous?”

“Fine, yes, it is beautiful. Is the dress new?”

“I picked it up this afternoon, it was on sale at Macy’s. Do you like it? I was worried it might be a little low cut for a charity dinner.”

“No, no, it’s beautiful. It’s just been a long day and I’m very tired.” That was an understatement since she and Evan argued for over three hours about this dinner and his reasoning for bringing Amber along. It wasn’t like Jon needed to be introduced to women, he had them falling all over him constantly and for Evan to neglect to tell her that his old school buddy that was staying the weekend was none other than Jon Bon Jovi was unforgivable. Blasted man, didn’t understand that even his own wife was hot for Jon.

“I hope that it’s no trouble picking me up. I mean if you’d rather, I can take a cab back home.”

“Wouldn’t hear of it, Evan and I are thrilled to have you coming along, it’s been too long since you’ve been out and about.” And it will be a cold day in hell before we included you again when the delicious Jon Bon Jovi is around.

“Thanks” she returned to her lusty thoughts of Jon shoulder to thigh against her body in that bathroom as they continued their drive and allowed the silence in the car to lengthen, pretty much concluding that her hosts were either still arguing or had been before they picked her up and was going to stay out of it to preserve her job. Looking out the window she was grateful to see the Pavilion looming ahead, at least she could get out of the confines of this car and their stony silence towards one another. She was secure in the knowledge there would be others she would know at the party, so she wouldn’t have to rely on Evan or Summer to play attendant to her.

Rising from the car, she was amazed at the amount of security and photographers, guessing there must be some high profile guests at the party for all this media attention. “This isn’t all for the charity is it Evan?”

“Must be, don’t know any other reason for them to be here.” He wondered if someone leaked the news that Jon was coming, not that he’d told anyone and Jon asked that he not announce it. His wife’s hand wrapped firmly around his arm and his left hand resting on Amber’s back, Evan proceeded into the building uncertain what Jon would say or do when he arrived to so much media attention.

Speaking to this one and that, Amber mingled in the crowd, finding no shortage of partners she danced nearly continually for the better part of the first hour of the party, time slipping by quickly, thoughts of Evan and his friend completely forgotten.

Strolling in a side door after seeing the paparazzi out front, Jon wasn’t in his best humor convinced his old friend alerted the media about his surprise appearance. So far his day hadn’t gone well and having the press outside wasn’t boding well for Evan or the woman he insisted Jon would have to meet before he took possession of the car. If it wasn’t for the hard on he had for that cherry Mustang, he wouldn’t be here, but he did and he was, so finding Evan in short order and getting the hell out was foremost on his mind. The cloying scent of myriad perfumes mingling that the older women seemed to prefer only added to his annoyance.

Stopping to take a deep breath, he reminded himself that he was in public, this was a benefit for Habitat and appearances were everything, steeling himself for the onslaught he anticipated, he plastered on his best synthetic smile and entered the room. As he expected the murmur started immediately and found himself getting introduced to every matron and giddy female within sight. He kept his eyes searching for Evan so he could take out his frustration on the one that deserved it, constantly moving through the room smiling and shaking hands as he went. Inwardly cursing profusely at his own stupidity for wanting the car so badly. Finally, he saw Evan across the room and it was at that moment that he smelled it, the same floral scent mixed with spices that she’d worn on the plane, the luscious Amber, the one he let get away.
