Chapter 50
Blushing furiously, Amber looked over at Jon, who was smirking, “I thought you were a better actor than that. What are they all going to say when we walk out of here with you looking like a Cheshire cat?”
“That you’re a lucky woman?” a devious grin appeared.
It was Amber’s turn to roll her eyes, “great, he’s not only a rock star, now he’s a comedian.” Seeing the exasperated expression on Cassidy’s face and then hearing Richie’s stomach growl, she realized they needed to get moving. Walking over to her desk, she pulled off one of the copies of the script for the project she was pitching next week. “Here. You don’t really have to read it, but if anyone asks, we were talking about the possibility of you having a part in the movie. Okay?”
Looking down at the cover, he recognized it as the project she’d been talking about during their regular phone calls. “Got it. Marco, right?”
“No, I’m thinking more like Vince. Devilishly handsome, a trouble maker, can’t keep his hands to himself? Sound familiar?” Laughing when Richie snorted at her description. “Okay, let’s go eat before you two have to drive to Jersey.”
“Us drive? That’s what chauffeurs are for,” opening the door for them, Richie stood and waited as she and Cassidy exited first.
“Oh, Amber, could I speak with you a moment?” Her boss, Kennedy Kohl, didn’t even look up when he heard her door opening, assuming it was just her. Standing at Brooke’s desk checking Amber’s schedule since her assistant wasn’t currently at her desk he hadn’t seen any appointments on it that would have warranted a closed door. Hearing other voices he looked up, at first recognizing Cassidy since she’d been in the office on a number of occasion and then blinking when he saw the two men exit behind them. “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you had ...” it was then that he actually recognized the two men and his eyes popped.
“Kennedy, this is Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. Guys this is my boss Kennedy Kohl. Jon stopped by to take a look at the script for that project I’ve been pushing. He’s considering the possibility of a role in it,” pausing for effect, she waited for the man to process what she was offering. “Now, if you don’t mind the four of us are going to lunch.”
“I didn’t know you were acquainted with Mr. Bon Jovi and Mr. Sambora.”
Amber couldn’t believe that her boss that met all kinds of celebrities and picked now to make a deal out of the two with her. “I met Jon when I worked for Evan. He was at one of the benefits that we attended and was at a party at Evan’s. Richie on the other hand, I met at another function. I really hate to do this, but they have a show tonight, so we need to get going.” She started away from the man, hoping that was all.
“That’s right, my wife is going tonight with one of her friends. Are you attending the show?”
“Me? I wasn’t going to, but Jon offered tickets to Cassidy and me, so it would be rude to not accept. Don’t you think?” Smiling sweetly at her boss, well, actually, the head of her division if she was honest.
“She’s leaving from here, a handful of them rented a limo for the ride to the Meadowlands, you’re both welcome to join them.” He was wondering why he hadn’t been told that they were having celebrity guests so that he’d be the one entertaining them as was normal company policy.
“Thanks, but Cassidy has a car and we both live in Jersey, so we’ll just go home from the show. Now, we really do need to leave.” Waving weakly, she turned and with just her eyes demanded they all start moving.
Ensconced in a back booth in the little deli diner that they’d picked for fast service and good food, Cassidy and Amber faced into the room with the guys facing them and the wall. It was easier to keep a low profile when they weren’t easily seen from the door. As they waited for their food, Jon grinned. “So, I guess Boss Man didn’t know you were hanging out with rock stars, huh?”
“Ah, that would be a no. He thinks he’s the only one that has the right to talk to celebrities.” Smiling back and wishing they could actually sit next to each other in public, although they’d agreed that at this point in their relationship the lower the profile, the easier it would be for them. “I can’t imagine what he’d say if some of the movie stars I’ve worked with started trouping into my office. I do want you to read that script though. I know you’re on tour and I know it’ll be months before you’re done. Shooting doesn’t start until July or August if they agree to produce it at all.”
“Enough shop talk, Amber.” Cassidy grumbled, “so we really have tickets to tonight’s show?” She’d no more than said it and realized how stupid she sounded.
Richie’s laughter was contagious, no more than did he start than Amber joined in with Jon following suit. “We do have connections, ya know?”
Blushing furiously, Cassidy had to laugh too. It really was a stupid question. “So what time can you get away from the office? I hadn’t planned on going tonight, so I don’t have clothes with me. We’ll have to stop at the house for me to change. What about you? You’re not wearing that suit are you?” Her eyebrows arched high into her bangs.
Shaking her head, Amber wasn’t about to wear a suit to a Jovi show. “Traffic is going to be a bitch. We’ll never get home, changed and to the show on time. I don’t know how we’re going to do it. Maybe we should just skip tonight’s show and go to the one day after tomorrow?” She knew that Jon would have objections to that and Cassidy screeched at her when she suggested it.
“No fuckin’ way! If you think I’m going to skip the chance to go tonight when Jon offers seats, you’re out of your freakin’ mind! Just tell that stuffed shirt you work for that you need to leave early.” Even though Amber was making better than double the money she had working for Evan and wasn’t having to fetch coffee any longer, sometimes Kennedy was just as bad as Evan where the male chauvinism came into play.
“How about we send the car back after you? We’re going to have to get going right after we eat. We have sound check in an hour or so. The driver will be waiting and you give him directions. We’ll see you when you get there.” Jon was grinning at the look on Cassidy’s face, what he wanted to see was Amber’s after they were alone at his place.
Sitting back as their food was delivered, Amber just nodded, wondering if her boss would go along with this or not. Didn’t matter really, she wasn’t going to miss out on spending her evening after the show with Jon. Diving into her food as did the others, talk centered around the merits of pork roll sandwiches, ketchup or mustard and whether or not the Giants would win over the weekend.
“That you’re a lucky woman?” a devious grin appeared.
